Croatian Wedding Traditions: A Complete Guide

There is no single Croatian wedding. There are thousands of them — each shaped by a family, a village, a region and the generations who came before.

Before you begin: every family is different

Customs vary between regions, communities and families, both in Croatia and among Croatian families abroad. Some traditions are kept almost everywhere; others belong to one area or one family. This guide follows the shape that many weddings share, so you can recognise each moment and decide what feels right for yours.

The best source is always your own family. Ask parents, grandparents and kumovi how things were done at home — those memories are part of the tradition too.

Morning at the family home

For many families the day starts at home, with music, food and close relatives. When the groom's party arrives at the bride's home, rakija is commonly offered as a welcome toast.

Some families also keep otkup mlade — a light-hearted exchange in which the groom's side negotiates with the bride's family before he can see her. How it is played out, and whether it happens at all, differs from family to family.

The flag leads the way

In many communities the barjak, the wedding flag, is carried through the day — at the house, in the procession and at the reception entrance. Its bearer, the barjaktar, is traditionally a friend or family member, though who takes on the role varies between communities.

A sprig of ružmarin

Guests at many Croatian weddings are given a small rosemary pin tied with ribbon. It is one of the simplest customs, and one of the most widely recognised.

The celebration

The kum and kuma hold a place of honour through the day. At the reception, live music — often tamburica — and the kolo bring guests of every age onto the dance floor. Music and dance styles differ greatly from region to region.

Many couples thank their guests with bombonijere, small favours to take home.
